Making the Most of Black Friday Footwear Deals

The title of this page is a garbled spin of "Black Friday TV deals," but the late-November sales season matters just as much for shoes as for televisions. Footwear is one of the categories where a discount can be tempting and still turn out to be a poor buy if the fit or purpose is wrong. A little preparation before the sales start helps you come away with pairs you will actually wear.

Know your size before the rush

Sizing varies between brands and even between models from the same maker, so measure your feet ahead of time, ideally late in the day when feet are slightly larger. Our size guide explains how to measure length and width at home and how to compare a measurement against different brands' charts. If you are shopping for children, check their size again, because kids' feet can grow noticeably within a few months.

Decide what you need first

Make a short list before you browse. A rain-ready boot for Portland's wet winters, a supportive everyday sneaker, or a replacement for running shoes that have lost their cushioning are all good candidates for a seasonal purchase. Having a clear goal makes it easier to ignore discounts on styles that duplicate what is already in your closet.

  • Compare features, not just prices: look at materials, outsole grip, water resistance and insole support.
  • Check the return policy: sale items sometimes have different terms, so read the shipping and returns details before you commit.
  • Watch for older colorways: last season's color of a model you already like is often the best value and the safest fit.

Try shoes on properly

When a new pair arrives, try it on indoors on a clean floor with the socks you normally wear. Walk around for several minutes, check for pinching at the toes or slipping at the heel, and keep the box and tags until you are sure. Shoes that feel tight on day one rarely become comfortable enough to justify keeping them.

To see what has recently landed before the busy season, browse our new arrivals and note the styles you want to watch.
